Importvaror is a Swedish term for goods that are brought into a country from abroad. Used mainly in business and economic discussions, the term refers to merchandise that becomes available in the domestic market either for household consumption or as inputs in production. It is the counterpart to exportvaror and to domestically produced goods.

Categories. Importvaror include consumer importvaror, such as electronics, clothing, and food, as well as industrial importvaror, such as raw materials, components, and capital equipment used in manufacturing. In some contexts a distinction is made between final consumer goods and intermediate goods.

Measurement and statistics. In national accounts and trade statistics, imports are recorded by value and by volume. They influence the country’s trade balance and current account and are monitored by government agencies and international organizations.

Procurement, logistics, and regulation. Importvaror move through international supply chains and are typically declared to customs authorities at the border. Importers may be obligated to pay customs duties, value-added tax or other taxes, and to provide documentation such as invoices and bills of lading. In the European Union and many other regions, VAT is charged on import, and procedures vary by jurisdiction. Businesses often use incoterms to allocate responsibilities for shipping, insurance, and duties.

Impact. The level and composition of importvaror affect domestic prices, manufacturing costs, and monetary conditions. Policy responses can include tariffs, quotas, incentives for domestic production, or diversification of suppliers.
