Immunodeficiency refers to a state in which the immune system's ability to fight infectious disease is compromised or entirely absent. This can be due to a variety of reasons, leading to increased susceptibility to infections. There are two main categories of immunodeficiency: primary and secondary.

Primary immunodeficiencies are inherited genetic disorders that affect the development or function of the immune system. These conditions are often present from birth, although symptoms may not appear until later in life. Examples include severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID), common variable immunodeficiency (CVID), and X-linked agammaglobulinemia (XLA). Management of primary immunodeficiencies typically involves prompt treatment of infections, prophylactic antibiotics, and in some cases, immunoglobulin replacement therapy or stem cell transplantation.

Secondary immunodeficiencies are acquired later in life and are caused by external factors that damage or suppress the immune system. Common causes include certain medications, such as chemotherapy drugs or immunosuppressants used after organ transplantation. Infections like human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which leads to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), are also a significant cause of secondary immunodeficiency. Malnutrition, chronic diseases, and certain cancers can also impair immune function. Treatment for secondary immunodeficiency focuses on addressing the underlying cause and managing opportunistic infections. Early diagnosis and intervention are crucial for improving outcomes in individuals with immunodeficient states.
