Immunizálás, often referred to as immunization or vaccination, is a process that provides an individual with specific protection against a particular infectious disease. It works by stimulating the body's immune system to recognize and fight off a pathogen, such as a virus or bacterium, without causing the disease itself. This is typically achieved through the administration of a vaccine, which contains a weakened or inactivated form of the pathogen, or parts of it, like its proteins or genetic material.

When a vaccine is introduced into the body, the immune system mounts a response. It identifies the foreign substance and produces antibodies, which are specialized proteins designed to neutralize the pathogen. Additionally, the immune system creates memory cells. These cells "remember" the pathogen, allowing for a much faster and more effective response if the body encounters the actual disease-causing organism in the future. This acquired immunity can protect an individual from becoming ill or significantly reduce the severity of the illness.

Immunization programs are crucial public health interventions. They not only protect vaccinated individuals but also contribute to herd immunity, where a sufficiently high proportion of the population is immune, making it difficult for a disease to spread and protecting those who cannot be vaccinated, such as infants or individuals with compromised immune systems. Vaccines have been instrumental in controlling and eradicating many devastating diseases globally, including smallpox and polio.
