Immunbetegségek, or immune system diseases, encompass a wide range of conditions where the body's immune system malfunctions. This malfunction can manifest in several ways: either the immune system attacks the body's own healthy tissues (autoimmune diseases), it overreacts to harmless substances (allergic diseases), or it is unable to effectively fight off infections (immunodeficiency disorders).

Autoimmune diseases are a significant category, including conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, multiple sclerosis, and type 1 diabetes. In these diseases, the immune system mistakenly identifies self-antigens as foreign invaders and mounts an inflammatory response against them. The exact triggers for autoimmunity are often complex, involving genetic predisposition and environmental factors.

Allergic diseases occur when the immune system produces an exaggerated response to typically benign external substances called allergens. Examples include asthma, hay fever (allergic rhinitis), and food allergies. The immune system mistakenly identifies these allergens as harmful and releases chemicals like histamine, leading to symptoms.

Immunodeficiency disorders weaken the immune system's ability to protect the body from pathogens. These can be primary (congenital), present from birth, or secondary, acquired later in life due to factors like viral infections (e.g., HIV), malnutrition, or certain medical treatments. Severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) is an example of a primary immunodeficiency.

Diagnosing immune system diseases often involves a combination of medical history, physical examination, blood tests to assess immune cell function and identify autoantibodies, and imaging techniques. Treatment strategies vary widely depending on the specific condition and can include immunosuppressive medications, anti-inflammatory drugs, allergy treatments, or in severe cases, stem cell transplantation. Research continues to unravel the intricate mechanisms of the immune system to develop more targeted and effective therapies.
