The field integrates physics of light with architectural and urban planning to achieve functional visibility, safety, and aesthetic effect.

Key elements include the choice and placement of light sources (such as LED, incandescent, fluorescent, and halogen), luminaires, and control systems (dimmers, sensors, and automated lighting). A layered approach often distinguishes ambient (general) lighting, task lighting for specific activities, and accent lighting to emphasize features. Daylight integration and glare control are important considerations in both interior and outdoor projects. Color characteristics of light, including color temperature and color rendering index, influence perception and mood.

Common metrics used to design and evaluate lighting include illuminance (lux), luminance, luminous flux (lumen), efficacy (lumens per watt), and color temperature (kelvin). Standards and regulations from bodies such as IEC, CIE, and national codes guide safety, performance, and energy efficiency.
