Ilttransporten refers to the process of transporting oxygen within a biological system. In animals, this is primarily achieved through the circulatory system, where oxygen is bound to hemoglobin molecules within red blood cells. These oxygen-rich red blood cells are then pumped by the heart to various tissues and organs throughout the body. Upon reaching the capillaries, the oxygen is released from hemoglobin and diffuses into the cells, where it is used for cellular respiration.

In plants, ilttransporten is a more localized process. Oxygen is taken in through the stomata on the leaves and also enters through lenticels on stems and roots. Once inside the plant, oxygen can diffuse through intercellular spaces within the plant tissues. For submerged aquatic plants, oxygen can diffuse directly from the surrounding water into the plant tissues. In some cases, specialized air channels called aerenchyma can facilitate oxygen transport to submerged parts of the plant, especially to the roots, which may be oxygen-deprived. This is crucial for root respiration and overall plant health, particularly in waterlogged environments. The efficient transport of oxygen is fundamental for the survival and function of aerobic organisms.
