Ilmanjäähdittimet, often referred to as evaporative coolers or swamp coolers, are devices that cool air through the process of water evaporation. Unlike air conditioners, they do not use refrigerants. Instead, they draw warm, dry air over a water-saturated pad. As the water evaporates, it absorbs heat from the air, thus lowering the air's temperature. The cooled, humidified air is then circulated into the room.

The effectiveness of an ilmanjäähdytin is dependent on the ambient humidity. They are most efficient in hot, dry climates where the air can readily absorb moisture. In humid environments, their cooling capacity is significantly reduced, and they can even make the air feel more uncomfortable by increasing the humidity.

The basic components of an ilmanjäähdytin include a water reservoir, a pump to circulate water to the cooling pads, a fan to draw air through the pads, and a housing. They are generally more energy-efficient than traditional air conditioners and do not require external venting, making them a portable and relatively simple cooling solution. Maintenance typically involves refilling the water reservoir and cleaning or replacing the cooling pads periodically. They are often used in homes, workshops, and outdoor spaces where a more powerful or refrigerant-based cooling system might be impractical or unnecessary.
