Ikkelateks denotes a family of synthetic latex-based elastomeric polymers used to form flexible coatings, adhesives, and thin films. The materials are produced as waterborne emulsions of polymer particles, enabling low VOC content and easy processing for textiles, coatings, and electronics.

Composition and properties: Ikkelateks formulations typically include acrylic, vinyl, and polyurethane components in deformable particles. The elastomeric networks yield high elongation at break and low modulus, allowing films to stretch with substrates without cracking. They often show good adhesion to fabrics and plastics, resistance to oils and abrasion, and adjustable clarity. Glass transition temperatures are generally below room temperature to ensure flexibility.

Production and processing: Ikkelateks are made by emulsion polymerization, with surfactants stabilizing nanoscale particles in water. Crosslinking occurs via thermal curing, UV exposure, or chemical crosslinkers, depending on the system. The waterborne approach minimizes VOC emissions and supports dipping, rolling, or spraying.

Applications: They are used in protective coatings for textiles and wearables, flexible adhesives for medical tapes and electronics, and coatings for displays and sensors. In textiles, they improve hand feel and wash durability; in electronics, they can encapsulate stretchable interconnections.

Safety and environmental aspects: As waterborne systems, ikkelateks generally exhibit low toxicity and reduced solvent emissions, though workers should avoid inhalation of aerosols and handle latex materials per safety data sheets. People with latex allergies may be affected by residual proteins.
