These systems are designed to inform parents and guardians about the nature of the content their children may be exposed to, helping them make informed decisions about what is appropriate.

The specific criteria for assigning age ratings vary widely by country and by the type of media. Common factors include the presence of violence, sexual content, coarse language, drug use, and themes that might be disturbing or frightening to younger audiences. Ratings can range from general audiences to those restricted to adults only.

In Finland, for example, the age rating system for films is managed by the National Audiovisual Institute (Kansallinen audiovisuaalinen instituutti, KAVI). Their ratings typically include "S" (Saavutettava kaikille / Allowed for all), "7", "12", "16", and "18", indicating the minimum age for viewing without an adult companion. Video games often have their own distinct rating systems, such as the Pan European Game Information (PEGI) system used across Europe, which provides age recommendations and content descriptors.

The implementation and enforcement of age rating systems can differ. Some are voluntary, while others are legally mandated. The goal is generally to protect minors from potentially harmful or inappropriate material while still allowing access to content suitable for their age and maturity level. These systems play a crucial role in media consumption, balancing creative freedom with the responsibility to safeguard young viewers and players.
