The primary cause of ihonvälineste is friction combined with trapped moisture, which can create a favorable environment for microbial growth, particularly yeast like Candida albicans. Factors that increase the risk of developing ihonvälineste include obesity, excessive sweating, wearing tight clothing, and certain medical conditions like diabetes. In infants, it is often seen in diaper areas.

Symptoms of ihonvälineste usually include redness, itching, burning, and sometimes a rash or maceration (softening and whitening of the skin) in the affected area. In more severe cases, secondary bacterial or fungal infections can develop, leading to increased pain, swelling, or the presence of pus.

Treatment for ihonvälineste focuses on reducing friction and moisture, and addressing any underlying infections. Keeping the affected skin folds clean and dry is crucial. This can involve frequent washing with mild soap and water, followed by thorough drying. Barrier creams or ointments containing zinc oxide can help protect the skin and reduce irritation. If a fungal infection is present, antifungal creams are prescribed. For bacterial infections, antibiotic creams may be necessary. In cases of severe inflammation, a doctor might recommend topical corticosteroids. Prevention involves maintaining good hygiene, wearing breathable clothing, and managing factors that contribute to moisture and friction.
