A hübriidsõiduk is a vehicle that uses two or more distinct power sources to move. Most commonly, this refers to a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) which combines an internal combustion engine with an electric motor. The electric motor can power the vehicle independently or in conjunction with the gasoline engine, improving fuel efficiency and reducing emissions.

Hybrid systems typically involve a battery pack that stores electrical energy, an electric motor, a gasoline engine, and a generator. During deceleration, the electric motor can act as a generator, converting kinetic energy into electrical energy to recharge the battery, a process known as regenerative braking. In some hybrids, the gasoline engine primarily serves to recharge the battery, while the electric motor directly drives the wheels.

There are several types of hybrid configurations. Parallel hybrids allow both the internal combustion engine and the electric motor to drive the wheels simultaneously. Series hybrids use the gasoline engine solely to generate electricity for the electric motor, which then powers the wheels. Series-parallel (or power-split) hybrids offer the most flexibility, combining the capabilities of both parallel and series designs.
