The electric motor in a hybrid vehicle is typically powered by a battery pack that can be recharged through regenerative braking. In a series hybrid, the gasoline engine acts solely as a generator to produce electricity for the electric motor, which then drives the wheels. The advantages of hybrid vehicles include reduced fuel consumption, lower exhaust emissions, and a quieter driving experience, particularly at low speeds when the electric motor is primarily used. However, they can also have a higher initial purchase price and a more complex drivetrain, which may lead to higher maintenance costs. The performance of hybrid vehicles varies widely depending on the specific design and the power output of the electric motor and gasoline engine.
