Höyrysäiliö, known in English as a steam vessel or steam drum, is a crucial component in many industrial steam generation systems, particularly boilers. Its primary function is to act as a reservoir for steam and water within a boiler. In a typical water-tube boiler, water is heated in tubes, and the resulting steam-water mixture rises into the steam drum. Here, the steam separates from the water. The separated steam is then directed for use in industrial processes or to drive turbines for power generation, while the water is recirculated back into the boiler tubes to be heated again.

Steam drums are usually cylindrical vessels designed to withstand high pressures and temperatures. They are constructed from robust materials, often steel, and undergo rigorous testing to ensure their integrity. The design of a steam drum is critical for efficient steam separation and water level control. Features like baffles and steam separators are incorporated to achieve this. Maintaining the correct water level within the steam drum is paramount for safe and efficient boiler operation. If the water level is too low, boiler tubes can overheat and fail. If it is too high, water can be carried over with the steam, potentially damaging downstream equipment.

The management of water chemistry within the steam drum is also vital to prevent corrosion and scaling, which can degrade the vessel's performance and lifespan. Regular blowdown, a process of intermittently or continuously draining a small amount of water from the drum, helps to remove dissolved solids and sludge.
