Héraðsdómstóla, often translated as District Courts, are the primary courts of first instance in Iceland. They handle the vast majority of legal cases, both civil and criminal, that are brought before the Icelandic judicial system. There are currently six district courts located in different regions of the country, serving as the initial venue for legal disputes.

These courts are responsible for adjudicating a wide range of matters, from minor infractions to more serious criminal offenses and complex civil litigation. Judges in the Héraðsdóms are tasked with hearing evidence, examining legal arguments presented by parties, and issuing rulings based on Icelandic law. Their decisions can be appealed to higher courts, namely the Court of Appeals (Landsréttur) and, in rare instances, the Supreme Court (Hæstiréttur).

The district courts play a crucial role in ensuring access to justice for all citizens. They provide a forum for resolving disputes efficiently and fairly at the local level.
