Hérað is a term used in Icelandic and some Nordic languages to denote a district or region, a geographic unit that has functioned as an administrative or administrative-judicial subdivision in the past. The concept is historical as a formal unit in several Nordic countries, though its exact role and boundaries varied over time.

In Iceland, hérað historically referred to a regional division that grouped smaller entities for purposes such as administration, taxation, and ecclesiastical organization. Boundaries often reflected geography and parish boundaries, and the composition of a hérað could change through reforms and shifts in population. Today, the term persists mainly in historical, cultural, or statistical contexts rather than as a current autonomous administrative level. Modern governance in Iceland is organized primarily around municipalities and, for regional planning, broader regional structures.

Across other Nordic countries, cognate terms such as Sweden’s härad and Denmark’s and Norway’s herred denoted similar rural or judicial districts. These entities typically served as local or regional jurisdictions within the broader state framework and often overlapped with landtast or parish structures. In the 19th and 20th centuries, many such units were reorganized or replaced by counties (län) and municipalities, and the formal use of hérað/härad/herred gradually diminished.

The word has historical and cultural significance beyond formal administration, and it remains part of place names and regional identities in various Nordic contexts.
