The environmental aspect focuses on preserving natural resources, protecting biodiversity, and mitigating climate change. The social dimension emphasizes equity, human rights, and the well-being of all people, ensuring access to education, healthcare, and a just society. The economic dimension aims for prosperity and growth that is inclusive and does not deplete natural or social capital.

The concept gained significant international recognition with the Brundtland Report in 1987, titled "Our Common Future." Since then, it has become a guiding principle for policy-making, business strategies, and individual actions worldwide. International frameworks, such as the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), provide a blueprint for achieving a more sustainable future by addressing global challenges like poverty, hunger, climate action, and responsible consumption and production.

Implementing hållbarhetsutveckling involves a shift in thinking and practice, moving away from linear models of production and consumption towards more circular and regenerative approaches. It requires collaboration between governments, businesses, civil society, and individuals to create integrated solutions that balance competing interests and ensure long-term well-being for both people and the planet.
