hätäreitit
Hätäreitit, or emergency routes, is a term used in Finnish urban planning and emergency management to designate paths intended to facilitate evacuation and provide access for emergency services during crises. The term combines hätä (emergency) and reitit (routes).
Purpose: They supplement the ordinary road network by ensuring mobility for people and responders when normal
Design and operation: Hätäreitit are marked with standardized signage and lighting, and they are kept clear
Governance: Municipal authorities, police, rescue services, and road operators cooperate to designate hätäreitit in land-use plans
Limitations: In dense urban cores, space for dedicated corridors is limited; infrastructure damage can compromise routes.
