A házilégy, Musca domestica, is a common insect belonging to the order Diptera. It is one of the most widespread insect species in the world, found in nearly all human habitats. The housefly has a short life cycle, typically lasting around 30 days in optimal conditions. Adult flies are characterized by their stout bodies, dull gray coloration, and a pair of membranous wings. They possess compound eyes and a proboscis used for feeding.

Houseflies are attracted to a wide variety of organic matter, including decaying food, feces, and garbage. They feed by regurgitating digestive enzymes onto solid food, which liquefies it before consumption. This feeding behavior makes them significant vectors for pathogens, as they can transfer bacteria, viruses, and parasites from contaminated sources to food and surfaces. Consequently, they play a role in the transmission of diseases such as dysentery, typhoid fever, and cholera.

The life cycle of a housefly involves four stages: egg, larva (maggot), pupa, and adult. Females lay eggs in moist, decaying organic matter. The larvae are legless and worm-like, feeding voraciously on their surroundings. After a period of growth, they pupate, forming a hardened case within which metamorphosis occurs. The adult fly then emerges from the puparium. Control measures often focus on sanitation, waste management, and the use of insecticides to prevent breeding and reduce populations in human environments.
