Háromság is a Hungarian term meaning “triunity” or “trinity.” It denotes the concept of threefold unity in various contexts, most notably the Christian doctrine of the Holy Trinity, which in Hungarian is typically referred to as the Szentháromság. The word can also be used more broadly to describe any three-part or triune structure, but its strongest associations are theological.

Etymology and usage clarify that háromság is formed from három (three) and the abstract-noun suffix -ság, yielding a notion of “threefoldness.” In Hungarian religious discourse, háromság often appears as a shorthand for discussions about the nature of God as one being in three persons—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit—an idea central to most mainstream Christian traditions. In this context, the doctrine is usually presented as a mystery of faith, with attention to concepts such as co-equality and co-eternity of the three persons, and to historical formulations like the Nicene Creed and the Athanasian Creed. Within Catholic, Orthodox, and many Protestant churches, the Szentháromság is affirmed, though different theological schools may emphasize aspects such as substance (ousia) or the relationship among the persons (perichoresis, social Trinity).

Beyond orthodox theology, háromság may appear in secular discussion to describe triads in philosophy, literature, philosophy of religion, or cultural motifs, describing any triple unity or three-part relationship. Some nontrinitarian groups, such as Unitarians or others, reject the traditional Trinity and may reinterpret or critique the concept.
