This deadband is a range around the setpoint where the controller does not change the output state. For example, in a heating system, a hysteresis controller might turn on the heater when the temperature drops below a certain point (e.g., 20°C) and turn it off when it rises above another point (e.g., 22°C). The difference between these two points (2°C in this example) is the hysteresis.

The primary benefit of hysteresis control is to reduce wear and tear on mechanical components such as relays, contactors, or valves. Without hysteresis, even small fluctuations around the setpoint would cause the actuator to switch on and off continuously, leading to premature failure.
