There are different types of hysterectomies depending on the extent of the surgery. A total hysterectomy involves the removal of the entire uterus, including the cervix. A subtotal hysterectomy, also known as a partial hysterectomy, removes only the upper part of the uterus, leaving the cervix intact. A radical hysterectomy is a more extensive procedure, usually performed for cancer, where the uterus, cervix, upper part of the vagina, and nearby lymph nodes are removed. The ovaries and fallopian tubes may or may not be removed during a hysterectomy; this decision depends on the individual's medical condition and age.

The surgical approach for a hysterectomy can be abdominal, vaginal, or laparoscopic. Abdominal hysterectomy involves an incision in the abdomen. Vaginal hysterectomy is performed through the vagina and typically results in a shorter recovery time. Laparoscopic hysterectomy uses minimally invasive techniques with small incisions and a camera. Recovery time varies depending on the type of hysterectomy and the individual's overall health, but typically ranges from a few weeks to a couple of months. After a total hysterectomy, women will no longer menstruate and cannot become pregnant. Hormone replacement therapy may be considered if the ovaries are removed, especially for younger women, to manage menopausal symptoms.
