Hypselodont refers to a specific dental adaptation found in some mammals, characterized by continuously growing or very long-erupting teeth. This type of dentition is particularly advantageous for herbivores that consume abrasive plant material, as it allows for the constant renewal of the tooth surface worn down by chewing. The term originates from the Greek words "hypselos" meaning high or tall, and "odous" meaning tooth, aptly describing the elongated nature of these teeth.

Animals with hypselodont teeth typically have high-crowned molars and premolars, often extending significantly above the gum line. This allows for a substantial reserve of tooth structure that can emerge over time as the chewing surface wears away. The roots of these teeth are either open or incompletely formed, facilitating continuous eruption. This contrasts with brachydont teeth, which are low-crowned and have a distinct root, typical of omnivores and carnivores. Rodents, such as mice and rats, are classic examples of hypselodont mammals, and their ever-growing incisors are a prominent feature of this adaptation. Horses and other ungulates also exhibit hypselodonty in their cheek teeth, enabling them to process tough grasses efficiently throughout their lives.
