A hypoglycemietest, often referred to as a blood glucose challenge test or an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), is a medical diagnostic procedure used to assess how the body processes glucose over time. It is primarily employed to diagnose diabetes mellitus and impaired glucose tolerance, and sometimes to detect hypoglycemia. The test involves measuring blood glucose levels at specific intervals after a person consumes a standardized amount of a glucose-rich drink.

The procedure typically begins with a fasting blood sample, taken after the individual has abstained from food and drink for at least eight hours. Following this, the patient drinks a solution containing a precise quantity of glucose, usually 75 grams. Blood samples are then drawn again at one-hour and two-hour intervals, and sometimes at additional time points depending on the specific protocol. These sequential measurements allow healthcare professionals to observe the body's insulin response and its ability to regulate blood sugar.

Elevated blood glucose levels at any of the measured intervals can indicate impaired glucose metabolism. A diagnosis of diabetes is typically made if fasting glucose levels are above a certain threshold, or if the two-hour post-load glucose level is significantly high. Impaired glucose tolerance, a precursor to type 2 diabetes, is diagnosed when glucose levels fall between normal and diabetic ranges. Conversely, abnormally low blood glucose levels after the glucose load can point to reactive hypoglycemia. The results of a hypoglycemietest are interpreted by a physician in the context of the patient's overall health and medical history.
