Hypofaryngeaalinen refers to the lower part of the pharynx, also known as the laryngopharynx. This anatomical region is situated below the hyoid bone and extends to the esophagus and larynx. It plays a crucial role in swallowing and breathing, acting as a passageway for both food and air. The hypopharynx is generally divided into three main areas: the piriform sinuses, the posterior pharyngeal wall, and the pharyngoepiglottic fold.

The piriform sinuses are two deep, pear-shaped recesses located on either side of the larynx. These areas are particularly prone to developing tumors. The posterior pharyngeal wall is the back surface of the hypopharynx, and the pharyngoepiglottic fold is a fold of mucous membrane that connects the pharynx to the epiglottis.

Hypopharyngeal cancer is a type of cancer that originates in this region. It is often associated with risk factors such as smoking, heavy alcohol consumption, and human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Symptoms can include a sore throat that doesn't improve, difficulty swallowing, a lump in the neck, ear pain, and changes in voice. Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination, imaging tests like CT scans or MRIs, and a biopsy.
