Hypodermisk refers to something administered or occurring beneath the skin. This term is most commonly used in a medical context, specifically in relation to injections. A hypodermic injection delivers medication or other substances into the loose connective tissue just under the skin's epidermis. This method of administration allows for slower absorption of the substance into the bloodstream compared to intravenous injections, but faster than oral administration.

Hypodermic needles are sharp, hollow instruments used to penetrate the skin for the purpose of injection or withdrawal of fluids. The term "hypodermic" itself is derived from Greek roots: "hypo" meaning under and "derma" meaning skin. Therefore, hypodermic literally translates to "under the skin."

Beyond injections, the term can also describe other phenomena occurring beneath the skin. For instance, hypodermic fat refers to the layer of adipose tissue located directly beneath the dermis. This layer plays a crucial role in insulation, energy storage, and cushioning of the body. In entomology, hypodermic structures can refer to specialized appendages found in insects, often related to feeding or defense, situated beneath their exoskeletons. However, the primary and most frequent usage of hypodermisk remains associated with medical injections.
