Hymnographers are writers and composers who create hymns—poetic texts and, in many cases, their accompanying melodies—for use in worship. The term covers a range of roles, from liturgical poets to professional composers and contemporary hymn writers who produce songs of praise, supplication, or doctrinal instruction.

In many religious traditions, hymnography is a distinct discipline within liturgy and devotion. Hymns may be sung by choirs, congregations, or monastic communities, and are often transmitted with fixed tunes or set to traditional melodies or newly composed music.

Historically, hymnography spans multiple cultures. In Christianity, late antiquity saw the rise of structured hymnography, with Ephrem the Syrian, Ambrose of Milan, and Prudentius shaping Latin and Syriac hymnody; in the Byzantine world, Romanos the Melodist and Kassia are noted for their liturgical hymns and kontakia. Latin hymnography continued through the medieval and modern periods, with Thomas Aquinas and, later, Isaac Watts and Charles Wesley contributing extensively to hymnody for churches and households.

Across other faiths and cultures, hymnographers compose devotional songs and liturgical pieces that play central roles in ritual life, sometimes preserving ancient forms and sometimes driving new musical styles. The work of hymnographers is often studied within the broader fields of liturgy, theology, and music history.
