Hylsborr is a geological term describing a narrow, vertical rock pillar formed by coastal erosion in glaciated regions. They occur in clusters along sea cliffs where hard bedrock resists weathering while surrounding softer matrices are removed. The resulting spires typically range from a few to several meters in height.

The word is believed to derive from Old Norse elements hylr, meaning shelter or hollow, and borr, meaning pillar. In regional geology texts it is sometimes used interchangeably with more general terms such as sea-stack, though hylsborr implies a thinner, more slender profile.

Formation and morphology: They form where fractures in bedrock are exploited by freeze-thaw cycles, salt crystallization, and persistent wave action. Basal undercutting leaves a narrow, tall pillar with a weathered cap. Typical heights range from 2 to 20 meters, with cross-sections that are mostly circular or polygonal.

Distribution and ecology: Hylsborr formations are most common along temperate coasts of the North Atlantic and similar climates. They provide perches for seabirds and roosting sites for other wildlife; their surfaces host lichens, mosses, and occasionally intertidal invertebrates in splash zones.

Human use and preservation: In some coastal landscapes, hylsborr are recognized as geological landmarks and are monitored for stability or protective measures. Local regulations may restrict access to prevent damage from climbing or tourism while maintaining their ecological and cultural value.
