A hydrograaf is a professional who performs hydrography, the science of measuring and describing bodies of water for purposes such as safe navigation, coastal management, and marine research. In Dutch, the term hydrograaf corresponds to the English word hydrographer.

The core duties of a hydrographer include conducting bathymetric surveys to map the seafloor, measuring tides and water levels, recording currents and salinity or temperature profiles, and identifying navigational hazards. They produce nautical charts and digital bathymetric models used by mariners, coastal engineers, and offshore operators. Hydrographers may work for national hydrographic offices, navies, port authorities, or private survey and consultancy firms, contributing to maritime safety, flood risk assessment, and resource planning.

Techniques and equipment used in hydrography combine field measurements with data processing. Fieldwork relies on echo sounding (single-beam and multibeam), sidescan sonar, sub-bottom profiling, and bathymetric lidar, supported by marine weather and oceanographic sensors. Positioning is provided by GNSS, and data are integrated in geographic information systems to produce charts, tide tables, and spatial models. Increasing use of autonomous surface vessels, remotely operated vehicles, and remote sensing complements traditional shipborne surveys, improving coverage and efficiency.

Historically, hydrography developed from nautical charting and evolved with advances in sounding, sounding accuracy, and standardization. The International Hydrographic Organization coordinates international standards and professional guidelines, while many countries maintain national hydrographic offices that publish official charts. The work of a hydrographer is essential for maritime safety, coastal resilience, and informed marine planning.
