Hydrogenready refers to equipment designed to operate on hydrogen, either as a blend with natural gas or on 100% hydrogen in the future. The term is commonly applied to gas-fired appliances such as boilers and burners and is used to signal that a unit can be installed today with natural gas while being convertible or upgradeable to hydrogen when supply and infrastructure are ready.

A hydrogen-ready appliance may use materials, seals, and burner designs that tolerate hydrogen and higher flame temperatures. In many cases, conversion involves burner replacement or modification, fuel train adjustments, and retuning of controls. Some versions are designed to operate with hydrogen blends now and to be fully converted to 100% hydrogen later.

Policy and standards for hydrogen-ready equipment vary by region. In several jurisdictions, officials and manufacturers describe hydrogen readiness as a prerequisite for future decarbonization of gas heating. Certification labels indicate readiness, but there is no single global standard; performance, safety, and compatibility requirements depend on local regulations and appliance type.

Limitations include the need for compatible distribution networks, potential materials challenges such as hydrogen embrittlement and gasket compatibility, and higher costs. Hydrogen readiness does not guarantee immediate operation on pure hydrogen or lower emissions until full hydrogen infrastructure and codes are in place.
