In use, hydratoi may refer to natural, mythic beings such as water spirits, or to artificial beings such as aquatic automata or nanotech life forms designed to operate in aquatic environments.

Most depictions place hydratoi in freshwater and marine habitats, where they range from elusive guardians of rivers and lakes to autonomous systems integrated into submerged infrastructure. Morphology is variable: some hydratoi are amorphous, able to coalesce and disperse with currents; others assume semi-solid forms with tentacles or fins.
