Hydractiniarians are a taxonomic family of hydrozoans, belonging to the order Anthoathecata. These colonial cnidarians are typically found attached to hard substrates such as shells, rocks, and even the carapaces of marine invertebrates. A defining characteristic of hydractiniarians is their polymorphic colony structure. Within a single colony, individuals, known as zooids, can differentiate into specialized forms with distinct functions. These specialized zooids often include gastrozooids for feeding, gonozooids for reproduction, and dactylozooids which are typically armed with nematocysts for defense or prey capture.

Many hydractiniarian species are known for their symbiotic relationships. Some live on the shells of hermit crabs, providing protection in exchange for mobility and access to food scraps. Others are epizoic, growing on various marine organisms. The reproductive cycle usually involves both asexual budding to form new zooids within the colony and sexual reproduction, with the release of gametes into the water column. The resulting planula larvae then settle and develop into new colonies. Their small size and often cryptic habitats can make them difficult to observe in the wild, but they play a role in marine ecosystems as both predators and prey.
