hullámtani

Hullámtani is the field of physics and applied mathematics that studies wave phenomena, describing how disturbances propagate through media or fields. It encompasses a wide range of waves, including mechanical waves in solids, fluids, gases, as well as electromagnetic and quantum waves. In Hungarian usage, hullámtani is commonly translated as wave theory or wave mechanics.

The core ideas include the wave equation, which expresses how a wave field varies in space and time. The principle of superposition allows complex wave patterns to be built from simpler waves, leading to interference and diffraction. Other key concepts are dispersion, where wave speed depends on frequency, and polarization for transverse waves.

Mathematically, many hullámtani problems are modeled by partial differential equations such as the classical wave equation ∇^2ψ − (1/c^2) ∂^2ψ/∂t^2 = 0, or their generalizations. In steady-state problems, the Helmholtz equation ∇^2ψ + k^2ψ = 0 arises. In quantum mechanics, the wavefunction evolves according to the Schrödinger equation, connecting hullámtani to quantum phenomena.

History: The wave perspective emerged in the 17th–19th centuries through experiments and theories by Huygens, Young, Fresnel and others, contrasting with Newtonian particle views. The eventual acceptance of wave theory in optics and later electromagnetism established hullámtani as a central framework for describing wave phenomena.

Applications span acoustics (sound propagation), optics (light and imaging), radio and microwaves (telecommunications), water waves and seismology, as well as engineering of waveguides, antennas, and metastructures. Analytical and numerical methods, including Fourier analysis and finite-difference schemes, are common tools.
