hreyfistöðvar
Hreyfistöðvar, also known as motor units, are the fundamental functional units of the musculoskeletal system. Each motor unit consists of a single motor neuron and all of the muscle fibers that it innervates. When a motor neuron receives a signal from the central nervous system, it fires an action potential, which travels down its axon to the neuromuscular junction. At the neuromuscular junction, the motor neuron releases neurotransmitters, typically acetylcholine, which bind to receptors on the muscle fiber membrane. This binding triggers a cascade of events that leads to the contraction of the muscle fibers within that motor unit.
The size of a motor unit can vary significantly. Small motor units, consisting of a motor neuron
The recruitment of motor units is a key mechanism for controlling the force produced by a muscle.
