Once the pilot hole is completed, a reamer is attached to enlarge the hole to the desired diameter. Finally, the product being installed is pulled back through the reamed bore.

A drilling fluid, usually a mixture of water and bentonite clay, is circulated down the drill string and back up the borehole.
