Hopeahalidekiteitä, also known as silver halide crystals, are microscopic crystalline structures composed of silver cations (Ag+) and halide anions (Cl-, Br-, or I-). These materials are fundamental to traditional black-and-white photography and have a unique light-sensitive property. When exposed to light, photons interact with the silver halide crystals, initiating a chemical change. This process, known as the photoelectric effect, frees electrons within the crystal lattice.

These freed electrons then migrate and combine with interstitial silver ions, forming tiny specks of metallic silver. These specks act as a latent image, an invisible pattern of reduced silver that mirrors the light intensity of the original scene. The sensitivity of silver halide crystals to light varies depending on the specific halide and the presence of sensitizing dyes. For instance, silver bromide is more sensitive than silver chloride.

In photographic processing, the latent image is developed using chemical agents that convert the exposed silver halide grains into visible metallic silver, forming the dark areas of the photograph. Unexposed silver halide grains are then removed by a fixer, leaving behind the transparent areas of the image. While largely superseded by digital imaging, silver halide photography remains valued for its aesthetic qualities and archival stability in certain applications. Research continues into novel applications of silver halide crystals in areas such as sensors and optoelectronics due to their distinctive optical and electronic properties.
