Hooajalisuus, or seasonality, refers to regular, calendar-related fluctuations in data or phenomena that repeat at predictable intervals, most commonly annually. It can also occur on shorter cycles, such as monthly or quarterly patterns. In time series, seasonality is the component that repeats with a fixed periodicity, and it can be either additive (the seasonal effect is roughly constant in magnitude) or multiplicative (the seasonal effect scales with the level of the series).

Causes of hooajalisuus are varied. They include environmental cycles such as temperature and daylight, agricultural seasons, and ecological processes. Human activity and social factors—such as holidays, school terms, or cultural events—also create seasonal patterns. In economics and business, seasonality commonly appears in retail demand, tourism, energy consumption, and construction activity, driven by weather, holidays, and policy schedules.

Analysis and handling of seasonal patterns involve decomposing a time series into trend, seasonal, and irregular components. Techniques include moving-average based decomposition, STL (seasonal and trend decomposition using loess), and other additive or multiplicative models. Seasonal adjustment methods, like X-12-ARIMA or SEATS, estimate and remove the seasonal component to reveal underlying trends. Analysts assess the strength and stability of seasonality and may compare seasonal patterns across periods or regions.

Applications of hooajalisuus include forecasting, budgeting, inventory management, and resource planning in business, government, and research. Recognizing seasonal effects improves accuracy and decision-making. Limitations exist because seasonality can evolve over time due to climate change, technological shifts, or behavioral changes, and over-adjustment can distort the true signal in the data.
