Hofteproteseresurfacing, also known as hip resurfacing arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure used to treat severe hip arthritis. It is an alternative to traditional total hip replacement. In this procedure, instead of replacing the entire femoral head (the ball of the hip joint) and the acetabulum (the socket), the surgeon reshapes the femoral head and caps it with a metal or ceramic prosthesis. The damaged bone and cartilage in the acetabulum are also reshaped to fit a metal cup. This preserves more of the patient's natural bone compared to a total hip replacement.
