A hjelpekald is activated by a user through a device such as a pendant, wristband, wall button, or touchscreen, signaling a central call system that is monitored by caregivers or a dispatch center. The alert typically includes the caller's location (room, ward) and the type of help requested, and is time-stamped for auditing.

Alerts are routed to the appropriate staff group via audible alarms, pagers, in-room displays, or mobile apps. The system comprises user devices, a central nurse or assist call console, and sometimes integration with building management or electronic records.
