Hitsauskaasu, known in English as welding gas, is a crucial component in many modern welding processes. Its primary function is to protect the molten weld pool from atmospheric contamination, such as oxygen and nitrogen. These contaminants can weaken the weld, cause porosity, and negatively impact its mechanical properties.

Different welding processes utilize various types of shielding gases, or gas mixtures, depending on the materials being joined and the desired weld characteristics. Common gases include argon, carbon dioxide, and helium. Argon is widely used due to its inert nature, making it suitable for a broad range of metals like steel, aluminum, and stainless steel. Carbon dioxide is a more economical option, often used for welding carbon steel, though it can lead to increased spatter. Helium, being lighter and more conductive, is beneficial for achieving deeper penetration and higher welding speeds, particularly in non-ferrous metals.

In gas metal arc welding (GMAW), also known as MIG welding, and gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), or TIG welding, the shielding gas is delivered through the welding torch. The gas flows around the arc and the molten metal, displacing the surrounding air. The correct selection and flow rate of the welding gas are essential for achieving a clean, strong, and defect-free weld. Improper gas shielding can lead to a compromised weld, requiring costly rework or potentially leading to structural failure. The choice of gas also influences the arc characteristics and the overall appearance of the weld bead.
