Historiated is an adjective used in art history to describe objects or elements that incorporate a narrative scene within their decoration. The term comes from the Latin historia, meaning story, and it entered English usage to distinguish pictorial storytelling within ornamental forms.

In illuminated manuscripts, a historiated initial is a large letter that contains a narrative scene or figure related to the text. These initials can range from simple, stylized figures to elaborate tableaux that occupy the space of the letter itself. Historiated initials served both to illuminate the page and to aid memory by linking the visual image to the accompanying wording. They are characteristic of many medieval manuscript traditions, including Insular, Carolingian, and Gothic manuscript production, and they coexist with non-figurative floral or geometric ornamental initials.

In architecture and sculpture, historiated elements appear as narrative carvings on capitals, friezes, corbels, and altarpieces. Romanesque and Gothic buildings often feature historiated capitals depicting biblical scenes, saints, or allegorical figures, transforming structural forms into conveyors of story and moral meaning. The term can also apply to historiated reliefs on metalwork, ivory, or enamel, where a figure or scene is integrated into the decorative foreground.

Historiated decoration contrasts with non-figurative ornament by its explicit storytelling function. While allusions to myth, religion, or daily life may appear in generic decoration, historiated forms foreground a narrative moment within the artistic unit.
