They typically hold university degrees in history or related fields, and receive training in archival research, languages, and ethical standards for handling sources. Interdisciplinary approaches—drawing from archaeology, anthropology, linguistics, and digital humanities—are increasingly common.

Their work contributes to national memory, education, and cultural heritage, and can influence debates about memory politics, curricula, and commemorations. As a discipline, history emphasizes evidence-based reasoning, careful interpretation, and ongoing revision in light of new findings or perspectives.
