Histology is the branch of biology and medicine that studies the microscopic structure of tissues. It examines how cells are organized within a tissue, how they interact, and how the extracellular matrix contributes to tissue architecture. The adjective histologický is the Czech term meaning “histological” and is used to describe structures, samples, or procedures related to histology.

Histological study involves a sequence of specimen preparation steps. Tissues are usually fixed to preserve their structure, commonly with formaldehyde, then dehydrated, embedded in paraffin or resin, and sectioned into thin slices. The sections are mounted on slides and stained to reveal cellular details. Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) is a standard stain, but many special stains and immunohistochemical methods are employed to highlight specific cell types, proteins, or nucleic acids. Electron microscopy may be used to provide ultrastructural information beyond light microscopy.

Histology is fundamental to understanding normal tissue organization and its changes in disease. It underpins histopathology, where microscopic examination of tissues informs diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment decisions. Cytology, by contrast, analyzes individual cells rather than tissue architecture, but it often complements histological assessment.

Applications of histology span basic biology, medical education, clinical diagnostics, and pharmaceutical research. Modern developments include digital histology and whole slide imaging, enabling remote viewing, quantitative analysis, and wide access to histological data.
