Damage to the hippocampus can lead to anterograde amnesia, the inability to form new memories, and can also impair spatial memory, making it difficult to navigate familiar environments.

Neurogenesis, the creation of new neurons, has been observed in the adult hippocampus, suggesting that it remains capable of generating new cells even in adulthood.
