When the body experiences hypoxia, cells cannot perform their normal metabolic functions, which rely on oxygen for energy production. This can lead to cellular damage and dysfunction. Anemic hypoxia results from a reduced capacity of the blood to carry oxygen, typically due to a low red blood cell count or hemoglobin deficiency. Histotoxic hypoxia happens when cells are unable to utilize oxygen even if it is present in sufficient amounts, often due to poisoning by substances like cyanide.

Prompt diagnosis and treatment are crucial for managing hypoxia, as prolonged oxygen deprivation can have serious and irreversible consequences. Treatment strategies are aimed at addressing the underlying cause of the oxygen deficiency and ensuring adequate oxygen delivery to the tissues.
