Hipotezave is a conceptual framework used in philosophy of science and science communication to describe how researchers organize and compare multiple competing hypotheses about a phenomenon. It formalizes the idea of a hypothesis space, where a set of explanations is developed, tested, and ranked according to their predictive success.

The term is a neologism combining “hipoteza,” the word for hypothesis in several Romance and Slavic languages, with the suffix “-ave” to indicate a collection or space. It originated in theoretical discussions in the early 21st century and has been used primarily in academic syntheses and classroom demonstrations.

Core features include three levels: a core hypothesis that states the central claim, a set of auxiliary hypotheses that supply background assumptions, and a set of predictions or observations. Hypotheses are evaluated on falsifiability, coherence with existing data, explanatory power, and simplicity. The framework encourages explicit articulation of assumptions to avoid unfalsifiable or overfitted accounts.

Applications include model comparison, hypothesis testing workflows, and science communication. In teaching, hipotezave helps students see how alternate explanations are constructed and tested. In data science and AI, it guides the design of competing models and the interpretation of outcomes by tracing the influence of auxiliary assumptions on predictions.

Critics warn that, in practice, specifying auxiliary hypotheses can become as complex as the original problem, potentially obscuring biases. Others note that criteria like explanatory power are sometimes usefully plural and context-dependent rather than absolute.
