Hipogonadizmus is a medical condition characterized by the failure of the gonads, the testes in males and ovaries in females, to produce sufficient sex hormones and/or gametes. This condition can manifest in various ways depending on when it develops and its severity.

In males, hypogonadism can lead to delayed puberty, reduced secondary sexual characteristics such as muscle mass, facial hair growth, and deepening of the voice. It can also result in infertility, low libido, erectile dysfunction, and in some cases, osteoporosis. Causes of male hypogonadism are diverse and can include genetic disorders like Klinefelter syndrome, damage to the testes from trauma or infection, certain medications, obesity, and problems with the pituitary gland or hypothalamus, which regulate hormone production.

In females, hypogonadism can result in delayed or absent puberty, absence of menstruation, and underdeveloped secondary sexual characteristics. It can also lead to infertility, low libido, and increased risk of osteoporosis. Causes in females include genetic conditions such as Turner syndrome, premature ovarian failure, autoimmune diseases, certain medical treatments like chemotherapy, and disruptions in the hypothalamic-pituitary axis.

Diagnosis of hypogonadism typically involves a combination of medical history, physical examination, and blood tests to measure hormone levels, including testosterone or estrogen, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and luteinizing hormone (LH). Treatment strategies aim to restore hormone levels through hormone replacement therapy and may address underlying causes when possible. The specific treatment plan is tailored to the individual's needs and the underlying cause of their hypogonadism.
