A hipnote usually consists of a concise idea or insight, optionally a citation or link, a timestamp or page reference, and one or more tags. Many implementations allow linking hipnotes to other notes or to specific moments in media, enabling non-linear navigation through a source.

Applications include study and revision, meeting or lecture annotation, and research workflows where rapid capture is prioritized over full synthesis. Some users employ hipnotes as a first-pass capture before integrating into longer-form notes.

Criticisms include risk of fragmentation, inconsistencies in metadata, and potential information overload if used without a strategy. Critics also note that the lack of standardization can hinder portability across platforms.
