Hiperhidrose is a medical condition characterized by excessive sweating that is not necessarily related to heat or physical activity. It can affect specific areas of the body, such as the palms, soles, underarms, or face, or it can be generalized. The sweating typically occurs on both sides of the body and can significantly interfere with daily activities, leading to emotional distress and social embarrassment.

There are two main types of hiperhidrose. Primary hiperhidrose, also known as focal hiperhidrose, usually begins in childhood or adolescence and has no identifiable underlying medical cause. It is thought to be due to an overactive sympathetic nervous system. Secondary hiperhidrose, on the other hand, is caused by an underlying medical condition, such as hyperthyroidism, diabetes, certain infections, or as a side effect of some medications.

Diagnosis is typically made based on a medical history and physical examination. In some cases, additional tests may be performed to rule out secondary causes. Treatment options vary depending on the severity and location of the sweating. Common treatments include topical antiperspirants, oral medications, iontophoresis (a procedure using water and mild electrical currents), Botox injections, and in severe cases, surgery to sever the nerves responsible for sweating. Lifestyle modifications, such as avoiding triggers like caffeine or spicy foods, can also be helpful for some individuals.
