Hyperandrogenism is a medical condition characterized by excessive levels of androgens, often referred to as "male hormones," in women. Androgens are a group of hormones that play a role in male development and characteristics, but they are also present in women at lower levels. When these levels become too high, it can lead to a variety of symptoms.

The most common cause of hyperandrogenism is polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a hormonal disorder that affects women of reproductive age. Other potential causes include congenital adrenal hyperplasia, androgen-secreting tumors, and certain medications.

Symptoms of hyperandrogenism can vary in severity and may include hirsutism (excessive hair growth on the face, chest, or back), acne, oily skin, alopecia (hair loss on the scalp), irregular menstrual cycles or amenorrhea (absence of menstruation), and infertility. In some cases, women with hyperandrogenism may also experience deepening of the voice or increased muscle mass.

Diagnosis of hyperandrogenism typically involves a medical history, physical examination, and blood tests to measure hormone levels. Ultrasound imaging of the ovaries may also be performed. Treatment focuses on managing the underlying cause and alleviating symptoms. This can include lifestyle modifications such as diet and exercise, medications to regulate hormones or counteract androgen effects, and in rare cases, surgery.
