Hikoiluhäiriö is a Finnish term that translates to "sweating disorder" and refers to any abnormal or excessive sweating. This condition can manifest in several ways, including hyperhidrosis, which is excessive sweating, and anhidrosis, which is the inability to sweat. Hyperhidrosis can be generalized, affecting the entire body, or focal, occurring in specific areas like the palms of the hands, soles of the feet, or underarms. Anhidrosis, on the other hand, can lead to overheating of the body as it loses its primary cooling mechanism.

The causes of hikoiluhäiriö are varied. Primary hyperhidrosis is often idiopathic, meaning its exact cause is unknown, but it may have a genetic component and is thought to be related to overactivity of the sympathetic nervous system. Secondary hyperhidrosis can be caused by underlying medical conditions such as hyperthyroidism, diabetes, menopause, certain infections, or as a side effect of medications. Anhidrosis can result from nerve damage, skin conditions like scleroderma, dehydration, or congenital disorders.
